The University of Pittsburgh Department of Radiology’s fellowship program is one of the most established and respected post-residency training programs in the nation. In fact, many graduates of the department’s residency program elect to stay at UPMC for fellowship — a testament to the excellent instruction available.
ACGME-approved fellowships are offered in pediatric imaging, interventional radiology and neuroradiology, clinical instructor training positions are offered in many other radiological subspecialties, while combined programs in multiple disciplines are also available. More than 15 fellows graduate each year —and have their pick from the outstanding opportunities that await them.

Abdominal Imaging Fellowship
The abdominal imaging fellowship is a 1 year non-ACGME accredited program that provides comprehensive training to 5 applicants a year in a collegial environment in a dynamic tertiary referral care setting. The program offers structured, supervised training during modality and site specific rotations that will include CT/MRI, ultrasound, and high volume image-guided intervention of the chest, abdomen and pelvis. Fellows are exposed to a high volume of interesting and complex cases involving diverse abdominal disease processes. While hepatic, pancreaticobiliary disease, oncology, transplant, trauma and genitourinary disorders constitute a large component of the referrals, all aspects of cross-sectional imaging are represented. The department utilizes state-of-the-art equipment capable of advanced, cutting-edge applications (such as virtual colonoscopy, MRI, MRA, CTA of the abdomen and pelvis, hepato-biliary specific contrast agents, MR Cholangiography, multiparametric endorectal coil imaging, high-resolution ultrasound, color and duplex Doppler, and elastography). Trainees will be involved in all aspects of clinical, teaching and research activities of the department. Section faculty will provide an interactive case based conference series specifically tailored for the abdominal imaging fellow.
The Abdominal Imaging Division at UPMC has an unexpected opening for a one year Abdominal Imaging Fellowship position starting July 2018. This is a non-ACGME fellowship position in a collegial, high volume academic environment where fellows are exposed to an interesting, complex and diverse case mix. The program fosters clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of all diseases of the abdomen and pelvis, including organ transplantation and chest imaging. The fellow will apply the latest advances and protocols in body imaging on state-of-the-art equipment across all major imaging modalities, with focus on MRI. The program also develops expertise in all image guided interventional procedures. The fellowship program includes a weekly structured fellow oriented teaching curriculum, bimonthly abdominal and pelvic MRI conferences, participation in tumor boards throughout the year. Generous vacation/conference time, one month of academic days plus one month of elective time will be provided. There are teaching, research and moonlighting opportunities. Qualified applicants must be able to secure an unrestricted Pennsylvania medical license and DEA, have completed an ACGME accredited radiology residency program and be eligible or certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Breast Imaging Fellowship
The breast imaging fellowship is a 12-month, non-ACGME accredited program that provides training in all aspects of breast imaging. The program offers structured and supervised training according to the curriculum set forth by the ACR and The Society of Breast Imaging. This will include interpretation of screening and diagnostic mammograms (including tomosynthesis), ultrasound, and breast MRI in addition to all related image-guided interventional procedures and radioactive seed localizations.
The University of Pittsburgh, Magee Womens Hospital offers state-of-the-art comprehensive medical care. Fellows will be exposed to a high volume of interesting and complex cases. The fellow will be educated in epidemiology, diagnosis, pathology, and therapy for breast cancer as well as benign breast pathologies. Fellows will be involved in all clinical aspects of the department and, if desired, research opportunities, including exposure to novel technologies. Trainees will participate in a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board conference and will have weekly didactic multidisciplinary lectures.
The graduating fellow will be an expert in image interpretation and image guided biopsies, as well as have the communication skills to provide compassionate patient care.
The breast imaging fellowship participates in the match process. The Magee Womens Hospital Breast Imaging fellowship is new for the 2020 match.

Breast and Women’s Imaging Fellowship
The Breast and Women’s Imaging non-ACGME Fellowship offers four full-time positions to qualified applicants. The program has been in existence since 1992 and has evolved to include the latest in technological advances including opportunities for research. The breast imaging rotation comprises nine months of the year and will afford the candidate the knowledge and experience to become an expert, well-trained individual in screening and diagnostic mammography, tomosynthesis, ultrasound, procedures (including ultrasound biopsies, stereotactic prone and upright biopsies and MRI guided biopsies), radioactive seed localization, contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) and MRI. State-of-the-art equipment is utilized with plans for 3T installation and universal use of Clarity HD tomosynthesis. The high volume and well-trained interdisciplinary teams further enhance the program. Didactic multidisciplinary weekly breast and tumor board conferences are offered.
The remainder of the year (three months) is spent in Women’s Imaging. Weekly tumor board multidisciplinary and biweekly educational conferences are offered. This allows the fellow to have a widened view of the extent of breast cancer and education in gynecological malignancies for a more complete experience in Women’s Imaging. Elective and research opportunities exist for those interested. Combined, this program offers superb training for the focused education of the Breast and/or Women’s Imager.

Interventional Radiology Fellowship
The UPMC IR Fellowship Program is accredited by the ACGME for three positions each year. The training program provides broad and comprehensive training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and Interventional Oncology. Fellows gain broad experience in all aspects of IR working closely with the oncology, transplant, hepatobiliary, trauma, and vascular surgery services at multiple sites on the UPMC academic campus including UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, Magee Women’s Hospital of UPMC, and UPMC Mercy. In addition, fellows rotate through the University Drive Veterans Affairs Medical Center, a 357-bed medical/surgical tertiary care facility located 1/4 mile from UPMC Presbyterian. The VA Medical Center is a national and regional referral center for liver and renal transplantation, cardiac surgery, oncology, radiation therapy, and geriatric care. Participation in multi-disciplinary conferences, tumor boards and rotations at outpatient clinics at all locations vastly enhance trainee’s clinical skills and ensure longitudinal care. The varying nature of patient populations and services at these institutions provide a broad and well-rounded clinical experience. Fellows are trained in all levels of care and are well prepared for a career in any setting from community radiology to academic tertiary care after completion of the fellowship.

Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship
The musculoskeletal imaging fellowship provides advance training in interpretation of musculoskeletal radiography, ultrasound, CT and MRI, as well as performance of musculoskeletal intervention, including arthrography, CT and ultrasound-guided bone/soft tissue biography. The fellowship covers all aspects of orthopaedic imaging; including trauma, oncology and sports medicine, and also rheumatologic imaging.

The neuroradiology fellowship offers the trainee experience in neurological aspects of CT (including dual energy and CT perfusion techniques), MR scanning, angiography, and spine intervention. Pediatric Imaging Fellowship
The pediatric imaging fellowship is designed to expose radiologists to all aspects of academic pediatric imaging, including trauma, oncology, body, and interventional. The fellowship also seeks to help address the current national shortage of pediatric radiologists by training the next generation of pediatric imagers. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has one of the busiest pediatric radiology services in the country, and therefore fellows are exposed to a wide variety of interesting and complex cases.
Over 150,000 diagnostic examinations are performed on pediatric patients every year at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. We have a close working relationship with the pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties including general and transplant surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, urology and otolaryngology. The pediatric radiology fellowship is fully accredited by the ACGME for the first year and an elective second year is an option.
The PET fellowship curriculum trains nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists to acquire skills, knowledge, and judgment pertinent to PET-CT clinical imaging and interpretation. In addition, research opportunities in the use of experimental PET radiopharmaceuticals in novel cancer therapy trials and the role of PET-CT and PET-MR imaging biomarkers for early cancer therapy response assessment are available. UPMC is a world leader in research and development of both instrumentation (the first PET/CT scanner was invented at UPMC) and radiotracers (over 100 radiolabeled compounds for human and animal use, including Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB)). Animal resources include a pre-clinical PET/CT suite and state-of-the-art radiochemistry laboratory, Inveon small animal PET/CT (Siemens) scanner. For human imaging, both clinical and research, four GE PET/CT scanners (8- and 16-slice; two new 64-slice Discovery VCT), a Siemens HR+ brain PET scanner, and a Siemens mMR Biograph PET/MR system are available. In addition, a dedicated brain workstation is equipped with advanced SPM and normal database statistical software for analysis of dementia, epilepsy and brain tumor.
Thoracic Radiology Fellowship
The thoracic radiology fellowship provides trainees with experience in cardiac MR and CT, as well as chest plain film, thoracic CT and MR and PET/CT of primary chest abnormalities and thoracic diseases. Research opportunities are numerous, as faculty members are currently participating in several clinical trials and multiple research projects.
Women's Imaging Fellowship
The women’s imaging fellowship is a unique training experience where radiologists are trained in both breast imaging as well as obstetrical ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging related to gynecologic oncology, postpartum complications, and infertility. In existence since 1992, the fellowship is one of the oldest in the country.
